Liposuction for Weight Loss

Liposuction, or body contouring, is a type of surgery that surgeons use to remove fat from various areas on the body. In the 1920’s, French surgeon Charles Dujarier tried his hand at a form of liposuction. This procedure did not go well. Later, Doctors Giorgia and Arpad Fischer, from Italy, improved upon this technique in 1974. Through the years the liposuction procedure has now been almost perfected. Today, more fat cells can easily removed from the body than every before. It has grown very popular and is now one of the most performed types of cosmetic surgeries.

The surgeon will place the patient under a general anaesthesia. Then they make a small incision in the area that the patient would like the fat cells to be removed. During the surgery the surgeon will use a small tube to extract the fat. Depending on the type of liposuction, some surgeons use a small amount of fluid to inject into the place where the fat has been removed. The entire process takes most surgeons less than 90 minutes to complete. Antibiotics can be administered before and after the surgery by the surgeon. This helps to cut down on any type infection that may occur. The patient will need to spend the night in the hospital for supervision after the surgery.

After the liposuction procedure has been accomplished a patient may choose to a surgical lift. When rapid weight loss has happened in a body the skin will often droop and sag. Surgical lifts help to tighten the skin in areas that fat had been removed. Some of this procedure is done during the liposuction process but it usually does not take care of all the sagging skin. Lipoplasty is another form of liposuction and these procedures are usually performed with a laser.

There are a few known side-effects that are associated with liposuction. Infections are one known side-effect that can happen in or around the incision area. Burns are some times associated with liposuction. This happens when the surgeon moves around the tube and it rubs the outer skin. Punctures of internal organs are a rare but possible side-effect that happens in a liposuction procedure.

Liposuction is a popular procedure for men as well as women. It is used to reduce cases of gynecomastia in men. It has also been used to remove fatty tumours of the breast in both men and women.
