Hair Transplants

Everybody has seen the commercials about hair growth or hair re-growth supplements either via pills of lotion that you have to smear on your head. These can entice many people, who have gone through hair loss, to purchase them. Most of them, if not all of them, are pretty much useless.

If you do want to re-growth your hair, and want to capture your past glory, when you had hair maybe a hair transplant might be the way to go for you.

During hair transplantation your hair will be actually transplanted from one part of your body to the other part. Leg hair is the one of the more popular choices when choosing where to get the hair from.

There are several ways that this hair transplantation can be done. One of those ways is called Strip Harvesting. What that means is that, a part of the scalp will be removed under local anaesthesia, and is then put back together with smaller version of the strip with hair that came from the donor region. This type of transplant will leave a scar on your head. However, with the longer hair that you will be able to grow again you should be able to cover it up.

The second way to have a hair transplant is with the so called FUE or follicle unit extraction. It sounds painful and, it might be painful, if you would not have any local anaesthesia. To be able to transplant the follicles the surgeon will make tiny little holes in your scalp and place the follicles in, one by one. This is a very long process to complete. You can recover fully from the FUE transplantation within 7 days. You will in fact feel no pain after the surgery is done. This method of doing hair transplants was first thought of in 1995 when a study was published by Drs. Robert M. Bernstein and William R. Rassman.

You will speak to a plastic surgeon before the actual surgery takes place. They will determine if your scalp is healthy and in good enough shape to have the transplant.

The cost for the surgery can be very expensive depending on your surgeon. The prices can range from between $6000 to $20000 for this procedure. This equals out to about a $4 to $5 price tag, per graft. A typical head needs between 1500 and 4000 grafts to be fully completed.

The surgeries are done on an outpatient basis. This means that after the surgery you can go back home. For the surgery to be a total success you will have to follow the doctor’s instructions.
