Tooth Whitening
Cosmetic dentistry uses a combination of art and science to significantly improve a patient’s dental health, dental appearance and tooth function. There are many different procedures that a cosmetic dentist can perform to give their patient the smile that they have always wanted.
Whitening
Tooth whitening is the most common cosmetic dental procedure performed today. Coffee and tea drinkers are great candidates for this procedure. Yellowed or dull looking teeth that go through a whitening process can become shiny and new again. While there are plenty of at home options for whitening teeth, a cosmetic dentist makes sure that the procedure is done correctly, without the consequences that these home kits pose to the teeth.
A cosmetic dentist will use different types of bleaching techniques to make sure the patient’s teeth become as white as possible. A technique that many cosmetic dentists are using today is called in-surgery laser teeth whitening. During this process the dentist will cover the patient’s gums for protection. The cover they use will depend on the cosmetic dentist but most use a gel type formula that will spread evenly over the gums. The patient will be given goggles to wear during the procedure to protect eyes from the laser beam. Some dentists have goggles with a built in DVD system. This will allow the patient to watch a movie during the procedure. After the patient has been prepped the dentist applies the whitening gel to the teeth. They will then use a handheld light laser to go over each tooth. This helps speed up the whitening action in the gel. After the whitening gel has been activated and has done its job the dentist will then rinse off each tooth and the gums. The entire process can last about an hour.
In some cases a cosmetic dentist may have the patient use special bleaching trays at home. These are usually custom made trays that the dentist created for that patient’s mouth. They are filled with a peroxide type gel that is activated when the patient uses the whitening substance that the dentist has sent home with them. The patient will wear these custom trays to bed each night for about two weeks. The patient then returns to the dentist’s office where the cosmetic dentist will finish the process with a deep bleaching session. This type of bleaching is often referred to as the Enlighten Deep Bleaching System.
