What to Expect After Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is a fairly extensive procedure that requires a good amount of recovery time. Some women may find that they are able to return to their normal activities within a couple of weeks, while others may require a longer period to heal.

Immediately following a breast reduction procedure, the incisions are covered with gauze and then either wrapped with an elastic bandage or supported with a surgical bra. The bandages and bras help to control swelling and support the breasts during the healing process. There may be a small drainage tube in each breast to prevent the buildup of fluids and blood. The stitches will be taken out one to two weeks after surgery however if the plastic surgeon alos did surgery to correct inverted nipples these will usually heal much quicker.

Pain, swelling and bruising are common following plastic surgery to reduce the size of the breasts. Many women will have breast pain for the first few days which can be relieved with medication. Discomfort may last longer than a week. Bruising and swelling may be present for several weeks. Wearing a surgical bra will support the breasts and help to keep the swelling down and ease some of the discomfort while the breasts are healing.

Strenuous exercise or vigorous activities need to be avoided for at least three to four weeks. Many women are able to return to their jobs and social activities after two weeks, provided they are not required to do any heavy lifting or exert themselves. A sports bra or other type of bra that provides extra support must be worn during this time.

Over time, the scars from breast reduction surgery may fade, but will not disappear. There are some over the counter ointments that aid in diminishing the appearance of scars. It is important to ask your doctor if and when it is safe to use these types of topical ointments.
